POSITAL Redundant Encoders

POSITAL redundant absolute encoders are designed for applications requiring functional safety and reliability in motion control systems. These devices integrate two independent sensing systems within a single compact housing to provide diverse redundancy, improving safety and error detection. They are widely used in industries where operational safety is critical, including construction machinery, mobile equipment, cranes, elevators, and stage technology. 

Diverse Redundancy 

Redundant encoders from POSITAL incorporate two distinct sensor technologies—magnetic and optical—within one unit. This approach, known as diverse redundancy, ensures that measurements are independently cross-verified. If discrepancies arise between the two sensor readings, a connected functional safety PLC can detect the fault and initiate a transition to a safe state. This design significantly enhances safety compared to encoders that rely on identical redundant systems. 

Functional Safety 

POSITAL redundant encoders support functional safety requirements up to Performance Level d (PL d), Category 3, according to ISO 13849. While they are not SIL-certified themselves, they are suitable for safety-critical systems when used in conjunction with functional safety PLCs. This combination offers a flexible and cost-effective solution for achieving safety compliance. 

Robust Design 

Built to withstand harsh industrial environments, POSITAL redundant encoders feature: 

  • Compact 58 mm diameter housing 

  • Protection ratings up to IP67 

  • Wide operating temperature range 

  • Resistance to shocks, vibrations, and condensation 

The magnetic sensor technology is particularly robust against dirt and moisture, while the optical sensor provides high precision. An integrated membrane reduces internal moisture buildup, enhancing reliability.
